The past week has been somewhat eventful. I spent a lot of time over the weekend on my feet (well, on my foot), which was good, because it meant I was out of the house doing things. Unfortunately, this has caused my right hip to get a little angry at me. It’s only a little uncomfortable, and I was already aware that FAI exists in that hip, but I am still a bit nervous, because I still have three more weeks to go on crutches.
On Tuesday, exactly three weeks post-op, I went to work for the first time. It took a lot of effort to get there (I have to get dressed, carry my computer to the car, get into the car, drive to work, then make my way to my desk), and since my job can be very flexible about work location, I will probably not go into the office every day until I’m done with crutches. Without that flexibility, I would probably still be returning to work this week, and would be able to go back full-time, but it makes my life a lot easier to only have to go in for important meetings.
A few things needed to happen for me to be able to go into work:
- I needed to be able to drive. Once I stopped taking Percocet, this became just a matter of getting behind the wheel. Unfortunately for me, I drive a manual car, so I’ve switched cars with Erin for the next few weeks
- I needed to be able to go all day without icing my hip. During last week’s follow-up, the surgeon told me I could now approach ice on an as-needed basis. For me, this means I will likely only use ice in the mornings and after physical therapy.
Being able to drive will hopefully make me feel less tied to the couch. Though the effort required to go anywhere is still high, so maybe not.
The other big step for me this week was the beginning of PT, which I started yesterday. Here’s how it went down:
- Met with the therapist to talk about how the surgery went, and the surgeon’s instructions. He noted that with no flexion past 90 degrees and only toe-touch weight-bearing for 6 weeks, the surgeon was being very conservative about protecting the labrum.
- I was asked to demonstrate my ability to lift my leg while laying down (on my back, my side, and my stomach).
- Did 15 minutes with a heat pad to loosen up my hip
- Was given 5 exercises to do, most involving moving my hip in different directions to begin to get the range of motion back
- Did 10 minutes with a cold pad
- I was sent on my way with instructions to do the 5 exercises twice per day until the next PT visit (which is tomorrow)
I’m very glad to finally be working towards a full recovery, and can’t wait to see improvements in comfortable ROM. I’m also excited for the time when I can ditch these crutches (only ~3 more weeks). I’ll continue updating this blog as I reach certain milestones.
